Keeping squirrels away with squirrel feeders

If you can’t beat them, join them. Sometimes no matter how well you have tried to squirrel proof your bird feeders, nothing seems to work. You might have to resign yourself to admit your little furry visitor is very clever and determined. In these cases the best idea may be to provide the wild squirrel with it’s own feeding station, his own squirrel feeders. Hopefully if you give him an easy and convenient food supply, he will prefer that to the bird feeder.  There aren’t many humane options for squirrel deterents for bird feeders, so this is definitely something to try.

An easy solution to feed your squirrel is to use a corn spike feeder and place corn cobs in easily accessible locations in your yard. Squirrels enjoy corn and it is inexpensive, buy it in bulk and store it in a metal garbage container. Other squirrel feeder options include using a wire feeder for the corn, a tray style feeder or a squirrel box feeder where the squirrel must lift the lid. Try to place any squirrel feeders as far as possible from your bird feeder to discourage wld squirrels from using the bird feeder. You can easily make your own homemade squirrel feeders or look for a cute design like the one pictured above.
